Obituary - Dr Chan Yuk Choi: 1950-2011

Message from Dr KC Wong; Deputising Consultant i/c; Department of TB and Chest on 23rd October, 2011

The wake and funeral will be held on 11th and 12th November 2011 at the HK Funeral Parlor respectively
It is with great sadness that I inform you that our former department head, Dr Chan Yuk Choi, passed away on 22nd October 2011 at Queen Mary Hospital.

Dr Chan was our Chief of Service from 1990 to 2003 and our Consultant in-charge since the post-SARS period in 2003 until his retirement in April 2010. He had successfully led the transformation of our department from what was largely a Tuberculosis Unit in the early 1990s to what it is today – the Department of TB and Chest, providing a wide array of services in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. His decisive leadership of our full team of doctors to help fight SARS at the Princess Margaret Hospital during the outbreak in Hong Kong in early 2003 was a candid manifest of his selfless, unreserved dedication to the medical profession.

Dr Chan’s contribution to medicine was not limited to hospital practice; he had served the Hong Kong Thoracic Society as treasurer and the Hong Kong Lung Foundation as an executive board member for more than a decade until he retired. He was always held in high esteem by his peers, subordinates and superiors.

It is deeply regretful that Dr Chan’s retirement years were so short. Dr Chan will be well remembered by his patients as a caring doctor, by his subordinates as an inspiring mentor and by his superiors as a competent colleague.

May God bless him and let his soul rest in peace for eternity.
