Spirometry Campaign in Hong Kong: heightening of COPD awareness

Dr CK Ng, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Lung foundation (HKLF), the Hong Kong Thoracic Society (HKTS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter) have launched a series of events to celebrate the 15th and 25th anniversaries of HKLF and HKTS respectively as well as to promote public awareness on chronic obstructive airway disease (COPD). As at 19th August 2011, in collaboration with organizations such as St. James Settlement and HK Society for Rehabilitation / Community Rehabilitation Network, the Respiratory Societies had conducted a number of sessions and offered spirometric assessments in high-risk individuals in the community, such as those aged above 40 and with a current or past smoking history. To escalate public awareness in COPD and to encourage the participation of such events, numerous educational talks and interviews had been made and were covered in various media including radio programs, TV shows, internet news and newspapers in June and July 2011. On 17th August 2011, a press conference was conducted by the 3 Respiratory Societies to alert the public on the importance and burden of COPD in Hong Kong and the whole world, as well as the ongoing Spirometric Campaign and the other related activities. The press conference had attracted huge media interest and was extensively covered in various media afterwards. Through the series of events and the efforts of the local Respiratory Societies, the importance of recognition of early symptoms of COPD in high-risk individuals, and the subsequent diagnosis by spirometry as well as smoking cessation can hopefully be promulgated to our Hong Kong population.

On 17th August 2012, a press conference was held announcing the Respiratory Societies’ initiatives to alert the public and to fight COPD, and launching of the Spirometry Campaign 2012.
