The Autumn Respiratory Seminar (ARS) was successfully held on 13-14 November 2010. Being another successful event with an overwhelming attendance, the ARS this year was being rather “atypical” in having program over 2 days. The Saturday morning program, held in Harbour Grand Hong Kong (North Point), highlighted the important areas of infections in Hong Kong and the Mainland China.

These included H1N1 influenza in China, MRSA, antibiotic resistance, antibiotic stewardship, ventilator-associated pneumonia and the role of pleuroscopy in pleural infections. The following whole-day program, being held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, began with a “Critical Care Symposium” that brought us important updates on use of ECMO in H1N1 infection and sedation towards weaning from mechanical ventilation. That was followed by 2 concurrent symposiums, namely “Imaging for Respiratory Diseases” and an Allied-health Symposium on “Pitfalls in Respiratory Medicine”. A COPD lecture immediately followed, which instilled participants with new insights from the recent landmark COPD studies. The afternoon symposium of “Advances in Therapeutics” updated us on the management of adult asthma with allergic rhinitis and the role of EGFR mutations in non-small cell lung cancer. The 2010 ARS was concluded with a symposium on “Infection”, covering antimicrobial resistance in respiratory infections, drug-resistant tuberculosis, pneumococcal diseases and the clinical controversies in managing the pandemic influenza A of 2009.
